Anak Krakatau, meaning “Child of Krakatau,” is an active volcanic island in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra. It grew within the caldera left by Krakatau’s devastating 1883 eruption and has experienced frequent eruptions since 1927. Its volcanic activity continues to reshape the island, demonstrating how volcanoes build new land.

Two small islands appeared near Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano after strong eruptions in early September 2026. Located between Java and Sumatra, the volcano produced lava fountains, ashfall, and lava flows that changed the surrounding landscape, according to the Smithsonian–USGS report.

Lava deposits expanded the main island’s western and southwestern coastlines, adding 32.8 hectares of land. This increased its total area to approximately 341.5 hectares, showing how volcanic activity can build new land.

Visitors observed the two small islands on September 22. One was approximately 760 meters northwest of Anak Krakatau’s coast, while the other was about 495 meters southeast. Scientists believe their appearance is connected to the eruptions, but further observations are needed to determine whether they represent new eruption centers.

At the time of the report, the volcano remained at Alert Level 2 on a four-level scale. Authorities advised people to stay two kilometers from the summit and one kilometer from the new islands. Anak Krakatau has experienced frequent eruptions since 1927, continuing to reshape this volcanic landscape.
