During the Halloween season, the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens transforms into an elaborate autumn fantasy filled with giant pumpkins, glowing lanterns, woodland creatures, waterfalls, and richly colored foliage. Recent displays have featured a towering pumpkin palace, an emerald pumpkin, whimsical owls and frogs, mushroom-shaped floral topiaries, and thousands of chrysanthemums, carnations, coleus, crotons, and other seasonal plants. The theatrical combination of living flowers, sculpted decorations, lighting, fragrance, and sound offers travelers a family-friendly alternative to frightening Halloween attractions—and admission is complimentary, with the Conservatory open 24 hours daily (MGM Resorts International, 2025).
For science-lovers, the pumpkins and gourds provide an interesting glimpse into the biology of the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes squash, cucumbers, and melons. Pumpkin production depends heavily on insect pollination: male flowers generally appear before female flowers, and each flower remains open for only a few morning hours, making bumblebees and specialized squash bees especially important (Hoidal, 2021). The exhibit also highlights sustainable horticultural practices; Bellagio reports that its display water is recycled and that nonviable plant material is sent to a local composting facility after each seasonal installation, reducing organic waste sent to landfills (MGM Resorts International, 2025).
