The valley around Canyon Junction is one of Zion National Park’s most memorable landscapes, offering views of the Virgin River, wooded canyon floor, winding scenic roads, and enormous cliffs that glow red, orange, and cream as the sunlight changes. From this area, visitors can admire Zion’s prominent rock formations and follow the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway as it climbs from the broad valley toward narrower canyons, switchbacks, and the historic tunnel. The cliffs are largely composed of Navajo Sandstone, formed from immense windblown dunes in an Early Jurassic desert. Beneath them are softer beds of the Kayenta Formation, which erode more easily and undercut the sandstone, sometimes causing large blocks to fall while the Virgin River continues carving and widening the canyon (National Park Service, 2024; U.S. Geological Survey, 2003).
Water makes the valley much greener and more biologically diverse than the surrounding desert slopes. Fremont cottonwoods, box elders, velvet ash, and seepwillows grow beside the Virgin River, while desert shrubs and pinyon-juniper woodland occupy the drier hillsides (National Park Service, 2025). These connected habitats support mule deer, rock squirrels, desert cottontails, lizards, native fish, and numerous birds; visitors may also spot peregrine falcons near the cliffs or desert bighorn sheep on steep, rocky terrain. Zion’s varied elevations, waterways, and microclimates help the park sustain more than 78 mammal species, 291 bird species, 37 reptile and amphibian species, and eight fish species, making the Canyon Junction valley rewarding for travelers interested in both scenery and wildlife (National Park Service, 2024).
