The Sentinel is a towering rock formation that appears to stand guard near the entrance to Zion Canyon in southwestern Utah. Visitors can enjoy excellent views of it from the Court of the Patriarchs area and from parts of the paved Pa’rus Trail. The Sentinel belongs to Zion’s dramatic landscape of Navajo Sandstone cliffs, created from enormous windblown dunes in an Early Jurassic desert. Over millions of years, uplift and erosion—especially cutting by the Virgin River and the collapse of sandstone undermined by softer rock—helped sculpt the canyon and isolate its monumental cliffs and peaks (NPS, 2024).
The Sentinel also forms part of a remarkably diverse ecosystem. Fremont cottonwoods, box elders, grasses, and other moisture-loving plants grow along the Virgin River below, while drought-tolerant shrubs and pinyon-juniper woodland occupy the drier slopes. These habitats support animals such as mule deer, rock squirrels, wild turkeys, gray foxes, and numerous birds (NPS, 2024, 2026b). An especially interesting fact is that peregrine falcons use The Sentinel’s high cliffs as nesting habitat; consequently, the National Park Service may temporarily close climbing routes there during the spring and summer nesting season. Visitors should check the park’s current climbing-closure page and observe wildlife from a respectful distance (NPS, 2026c).
