Hagen Canyon Natural Preserve in Red Rock Canyon State Park.

Hagen Canyon Natural Preserve is a 1,145-acre protected area within Red Rock Canyon State Park, located west of California State Route 14 and south of Abbott Drive in Kern County. Established in 1974, the preserve protects the canyon’s exceptional scenery, geology, ecosystems, and cultural resources (California State Parks, 2023). For travelers, the relatively easy Hagen Canyon Trail is approximately 1.2 miles long with only about 65 feet of elevation gain, passing beneath colorful cliffs, tilted rock layers, natural openings, and formations such as Camel Rock (California State Parks Foundation, 2025). Red Rock Canyon State Park is about 25 miles northeast of Mojave via Highway 14; day use is permitted from sunrise to sunset, and visitors should carry abundant water, wear sturdy footwear, avoid entering washes during threatening weather, and check current conditions before traveling (California State Parks, 2026).

The canyon’s striped cliffs preserve sedimentary and volcanic deposits of the Ricardo Group, including sandstone, clay, conglomerate, lava, and pale volcanic ash; iron-bearing minerals oxidized to produce many of the red and pink colors, while erosion sculpted the softer beds into fluted walls and unusual shapes (California Geological Survey, 2015). Desert vegetation provides food and shelter for roadrunners, hawks, hares, rodents, lizards, and other animals adapted to heat and scarce water, while the wider park also protects sensitive species such as the desert tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel, golden eagle, prairie falcon, and several rare plants (California State Parks, 2007). The latest official research-related update reports that California State Parks prepared new natural- and cultural-resource studies during its recent planning process, continues mapping changes in sensitive-species distributions, and encourages further partnerships with universities for field research and long-term ecological monitoring—important work as climate variability, erosion, and recreation alter this fragile Mojave Desert landscape (California State Parks, 2023).
