Driving southwest from Las Vegas on Interstate 15, travelers cross the Nevada–California state line near Primm and enter the vast Mojave Desert, where broad valleys, rugged mountain ranges, dry lake basins, creosote-bush flats, and distant volcanic formations create a dramatic open landscape. Near Baker—the northern gateway to Mojave National Preserve—the highway passes close to the dry Soda Lake basin and the Zzyzx area, whose springs and wetlands are remnants of a much wetter prehistoric landscape (National Park Service, 2023). Continuing toward Barstow, the scenery alternates between isolated desert plains, rocky hills, railroad corridors, and small service communities before becoming more developed around Barstow, an important transportation crossroads between I-15 and I-40.

From Barstow, travelers can continue south on I-15 toward Victorville and then follow CA-18 east through Apple Valley to Lucerne Valley. In Apple Valley, CA-18—also known locally as the Happy Trails Highway—passes businesses and residential areas before returning to a quieter high-desert setting characterized by Joshua trees, desert scrub, broad alluvial plains, and views of the San Bernardino Mountains (Town of Apple Valley, 2021). Services become less frequent east of Apple Valley, so drivers should carry water, maintain adequate fuel, and check weather and road conditions before departure; desert heat can be dangerous, while strong winds, flash flooding, construction, and traffic incidents may affect the route. Caltrans recommends consulting QuickMap or its highway-information service for current restrictions and live traffic conditions (California Department of Transportation, n.d.).
