
The Sag Pond lies near the southern boundary of Carrizo Plain National Monument beside Soda Lake Road, directly along the San Andreas Fault. A sag pond forms where movement within a fault zone creates a shallow, enclosed depression that collects rainwater and sediment. Because the dry climate preserves landforms with relatively little erosion, visitors can clearly recognize fault-related features such as scarps, ridges, offset streams, and normally dry ponds across the monument (U.S. Geological Survey [USGS], n.d.-a). Nearby Wallace Creek provides especially dramatic evidence of tectonic movement: the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake shifted the ground approximately 30 feet, or 9 meters, along this section of the fault (USGS, n.d.-b).
The pond can be viewed from a roadside pullout along the paved southern portion of Soda Lake Road, near the monument’s entrance kiosk. Although the main road is accessible under favorable conditions, Carrizo Plain is remote and has no nearby fuel, food, drinking water, or dependable cellular service; visitors should bring supplies, download a map, remain on designated roads, and check current BLM road conditions before traveling. Dirt roads can quickly become muddy and impassable after rain, while summer temperatures can be extremely hot (Bureau of Land Management [BLM], n.d.-a). Late winter and spring generally offer cooler weather, greener scenery, and the best possibility of seeing water in the pond and wildflowers across the surrounding plain.

The Sag Pond is surrounded by grassland, saltbush scrub, and dry hills adapted to Carrizo Plain’s low and irregular rainfall. When the depression holds water, it temporarily increases moisture and plant growth in an otherwise dry landscape; as it dries, mud and organic material become part of its layered sediment record. The wider monument protects rare wildlife including the endangered San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, and blunt-nosed leopard lizard, along with tule elk, pronghorn, raptors, and many grassland birds (BLM, 2026). Visitors may also see colorful goldfields, phacelias, hillside daisies, and fiddlenecks after sufficiently wet winters, but blooms vary greatly from year to year (National Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA], 2026).
Recent research has shown that the pond is more than a fault-created landmark—it is also a natural archive of California’s climate history. Scientists analyzed five sediment cores taken from a sag pond in southern Carrizo Plain and identified thick layers probably deposited by major floods around 1525 and 1760, during the wetter Little Ice Age. The researchers concluded that sag ponds could help reconstruct past atmospheric-river floods and improve understanding of California’s future flood hazards (Kirby et al., 2024). More recently, NASA scientists collected field measurements in Carrizo Plain during the spring 2026 bloom to test a satellite-based system for monitoring flowering across large landscapes, demonstrating the monument’s continuing value for geological, climatic, and ecological research (NASA, 2026).
