
Upper Eagle Falls is a beautiful mountain cascade near Emerald Bay on the southwestern side of Lake Tahoe, California. Eagle Creek rushes through a steep granite channel, creating small waterfalls, rapids and clear pools before flowing toward Emerald Bay. A footbridge above the cascade gives visitors an impressive close-up view of the water and rocky gorge. The Eagle Falls trailhead is also a major entrance to Desolation Wilderness and should not be confused with Lower Eagle Falls, which is reached from the Vikingsholm area below Emerald Bay (U.S. Forest Service, 2026a).
The trailhead is beside California Highway 89, across the road from Emerald Bay. Reaching Upper Eagle Falls requires a short but steep climb over uneven stone steps, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and stay away from slippery rocks and fast-moving water. Those wishing to continue can hike approximately one mile each way to Eagle Lake on a trail rated moderate by the Forest Service; longer and more difficult routes lead to Middle Velma Lake, Dicks Lake and Dicks Pass. Parking is limited and the area can become crowded during summer, so arriving early is helpful. Travelers should also check current weather, wildfire conditions, parking fees and wilderness-permit requirements before visiting (U.S. Forest Service, 2026b).

The dramatic landscape around Upper Eagle Falls was shaped by ancient magma and Ice Age glaciers. Much of the exposed bedrock is granodiorite, an igneous rock that formed when molten material cooled slowly beneath Earth’s surface. Later, glaciers moved through the region, polishing the rocks, deepening mountain valleys and carving the basin now occupied by Emerald Bay. The glaciers also left ridges of mixed rock and soil called moraines. Today, Eagle Creek continues to erode the fractured bedrock and transport sediment downhill, especially during spring snowmelt, when the waterfall is usually most powerful (California State Parks, n.d.-a, n.d.-b).
The creek provides a cool, moist habitat within the surrounding Sierra Nevada forest. Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, lodgepole pine, white fir, red fir and incense cedar grow around the Lake Tahoe Basin, while willows and other water-loving plants occupy streamside areas. Visitors may see Steller’s jays, American dippers, ravens, chipmunks, Douglas squirrels and mule deer, while black bears also inhabit the region; food should always be secured and wildlife should never be fed (Murphy & Knopp, 2000; Schlesinger & Romsos, 2000). Recent research is revealing how these mountain watersheds affect Lake Tahoe itself. A 2025 study found that a wet year produced 54% more streamflow and 37% less underwater light than a drought year at the study locations, demonstrating that changing precipitation and runoff can strongly influence biological productivity near stream mouths (Loria et al., 2025). The latest UC Davis clarity report found that Lake Tahoe’s average water clarity improved to 69.2 feet in 2025, but the long-term trend remained mostly unchanged; scientists are now investigating unusually high numbers of tiny suspended particles that may be limiting summer clarity (Tahoe Environmental Research Center, 2026).
